The Palace of Velarde
A trip to the past in the heart of Santillana del Mar

Located in the historic centre of Santillana del Mar, the Palacio de Velarde is one of the most representative examples of Renaissance civil architecture in northern Spain. This unique building is today the only Renaissance palace that can be visited in Cantabria, which makes it not only an exceptional testimony of the civil architecture of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, but also a living symbol of the transition between the Middle Ages and Modernity.

The Velarde Palace is part of the valuable historical-artistic ensemble of the town

The Palacio de Velarde is part of the valuable historical-artistic complex of the town and is an essential stop for those looking for what to see in Santillana del Mar or enjoy a different museum in Cantabria.

The Palace had its origins in a late medieval tower much smaller than what is seen today. It stands as a sister tower to another, located in the nearby Plaza del Cantón, also belonging to the powerful Velarde family, which will play a fundamental role in the history of the town.

During the sixteenth century the building was extended by Pedro Velarde and, later, by his son Alonso. These began a profound transformation incorporating characteristic elements of the Renaissance: proportion, symmetry, noble coats of arms, stone balconies and ornamental details inspired by classicism that are still preserved. This reform transformed the Palace into a jewel of the Renaissance in Cantabria, reflecting the cultural values of the time: rationality, prestige and classical heritage. Subsequently, the palace experienced periods of splendour, reforms and abandonments, especially during the Baroque period.

A unique experience

That will allow you to travel to the Renaissance without leaving Cantabria, in one of the places with the most history in Santillana del Mar.

Today, the Palace has been carefully rehabilitated to become a site museum, which exhibits its heritage in the original rooms in which the historical events were lived. Spread over more than 2,000 m² and three floors, visitors can admire an exceptional museum collection that includes works of art, manuscripts, lithographs, tapestries, weapons, original furniture and historical documents.
